Sink your teeth into these Nutella Greek yogurt dirt cups bursting with chocolate hazelnut flavor! Gummy worms and Oreo "dirt" cover the top of this easy, 4-ingredient sweet treat that comes together in just 15 minutes.

Spoon about to dig into a Nutella yogurt dirt cups for kids Halloween with gummy worms and crushed Oreos.

What are Dirt Cups?

A dirt cup is a whipped chocolate dessert that's usually topped with chocolate cookie crumbles to resemble dirt. They are also often served with gummy candy, like gummy worms, on top of the dessert. Dirt cups are popular around Halloween but are also served at parties and celebrations as a fun snack.

This Nutella yogurt dirt cup recipe is slightly different than others. We're using nonfat Greek yogurt and Nutella as the base instead of traditional pudding, whipped topping or cream cheese. Greek yogurt adds some protein to this delicious snack while balancing out the sweetness from the chocolate Oreo cookies and Nutella.

Why You'll Love Nutella Yogurt Dirt Cups

  • Quick and easy to make. This recipe only takes four ingredients and comes together in just 15 minutes.
  • So festive! Make these dirt cups for Halloween, a child's birthday party or just because. You can customize the candy toppings and really make them fit any occasion. It's a perfect recipe for a party, just like these no-bake lemon truffles.
  • Protein-packed base. Greek nonfat yogurt, the ingredient I used as the base for this recipe, has lots of protein and makes a perfect base for the Nutella.

Ingredients You'll Need

Ingredients for an easy dirt cup recipe - gummy worms, Nutella, yogurt, Oreos.
  • Yogurt. I used nonfat greek yogurt for this recipe but any other plain yogurt will work just fine.
  • Nutella. The star of the show! This chocolate hazelnut spread will give the dirt cups their chocolatey taste.
  • Oreos. Crushed Oreos make up the "dirt" in these dirt cups. You'll crush up the whole cookie so no need to separate the cream!
  • Gummy worms. What's a dirt cup without a little worm action?! These creepy crawlies are a delicious, fun addition to the dirt cups.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Mix yogurt and Nutella. In a bowl, mix the greek yogurt and Nutella together until completely incorporated. Make sure there are no streaks of Nutella or greek yogurt left behind.
  • Crush the Oreos. If you're making this with kids, this step is perfect to get their help! Place the Oreos in a zip top bag, close the bag well and crush them with a meat tenderizer or rolling pin. No need to separate the cookies from the cream - we're using the whole cookie. You can also use a food processor or blender to crush the Oreos, if you prefer.
  • Layer and serve. Spoon the yogurt mixture into a clear glass and make sure to clean up the rim of the glass with a damp paper towel for a clean look at the top of the glass. Top with the crushed Oreo "dirt" and place the gummy worms on top , in a way that looks like they're coming out of the dirt and spilling out of cup. Creepy crawly fun!

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Yogurt. I used nonfat Greek yogurt in this recipe for a little extra protein and a thicker consistency but feel free to sub with any plain yogurt.
  • Oreos. Any chocolate cookie will do for the "dirt" so no worries if you don't have Oreos in your pantry. You can also use leftover pieces of cake, pulsed until very fine and crumbly.
  • Gummy worms. Gummy candy make the dirt cups feel festive and Halloween-y but, you can totally opt for another candy such as gummy spiders, eye candy or even gummy bats and fangs. Alternatively, you can make this dirt cup a bit healthier by substituting the candy for fruits like freshly cut strawberries or blueberries.

Dirt Cup Variations

  • Layering. Go crazy with the "dirt!" Feel free start with a layer of Oreo "dirt" at the bottom of the cup and then alternate between yogurt and "dirt" layers until you reach the top of the cup.
  • Large format vs. individual servings. Whether you're planning on serving these dirt cups at a party or just don't have the time to make individual cups, you can absolutely serve this in a large serving dish. Assemble this recipe in the serving dish just as you would an individual portion and have guests serve themselves scoops of the dirt cup.
  • Different flavor base. If you're not a fan of chocolate, you can absolutely change this recipe. Simply use vanilla yogurt and omit the Nutella for a subtly sweet taste or add some maple syrup to flavor the base for a cozy fall snack.

Storing Nutella Yogurt Dirt Cups

You can definitely store the assembled Nutella yogurt dirt cups in the fridge for up to three days in an airtight container. However, keep in mind that the Oreo "dirt" will get soggy as the days go by and the gummy worms will harden in the fridge.

If you can, try storing the different components of the dirt cups separately. So, store the Nutella yogurt in the fridge and the Oreo "dirt" and gummy worms in the pantry.

FAQ

Can I Make Nutella Yogurt Dirt Cups in Advance?

You totally can! Make the Nutella yogurt mixture and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. You can also crush the Oreo cookies for the "dirt" about three days in advance, too. Store the "dirt" in the same zip top bag you crushed the cookies in (as long as there are no holes from when you crushed the cookies) or transfer to a new zip top bag and store at room temperature. It's best to place the Oreo "dirt" and gummy worms in the cup right when you're ready to serve because the "dirt" will get soggy in the fridge as the days go by and the gummy worms will harden in the fridge.

How Do I Crush the Oreos?

You can crush the Oreos for the "dirt" either by hand, pounding the Oreos in a zip top bag with a meat tenderizer, or in the food processor or blender. No need to separate the cookies from the cream - you'll want to use the whole cookie!

Can I Freeze Dirt Cups?

I don't recommend freezing the dirt cups since the "dirt" topping may get soggy once it thaws.
